Guwahati, Feb 11 (NationPress) Celebrating the Union Budget 2026-27 as both historic and forward-thinking, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated on Wednesday that the Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region (MDoNER) has been allocated Rs 6,812 crore, which reflects an increase of Rs 897 crore from the previous fiscal year.
The Budget is set to instigate positive transformations across the nation and the Northeastern region, he emphasized.
In a press conference, Chouhan revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has sanctioned the Assam government's request for the procurement of 60,500 MT of rapeseed/mustard for the Rabi 2026 season at the Minimum Support Price under the Price Support Scheme in Assam.
On the topic of Assam, the minister mentioned that for FY 2026–27, a budget of Rs 49,725 crore has been allocated for tax devolution.
Since 2014, Assam has benefitted from around Rs 3.12 lakh crore through tax devolution, he pointed out.
Among the healthcare initiatives highlighted in the Budget is Biopharma SHAKTI (Strategy for Healthcare Advancement through Knowledge, Technology and Innovation), which will have an investment of Rs 10,000 crore over five years, aimed at enhancing domestic capabilities in biologics and biosimilars to combat the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
As part of this initiative, existing facilities such as NIPER Guwahati will receive upgrades, fostering research, innovation, and the development of skilled manpower in the region, according to the Union Minister.
Chouhan also announced that the agriculture budget has risen to Rs 1,32,561 crore this year, reaffirming the Narendra Modi government's dedication to farmers’ welfare.
A budgetary provision of Rs 9,967 crore has been earmarked for agricultural education and research to bolster innovation and scientific advancement. To guarantee the accessibility of affordable fertilizers and reduce farmers' production costs, a fertiliser subsidy of Rs 1,70,944 crore has been allocated, he stated.
In relation to the Ministry of Rural Development, Chouhan indicated that its budget has increased by 21 percent this year.
Within this allocation, over Rs 1.51 lakh crore has been set aside for the ‘VB - G RAM G’ Act, compared to Rs 86,000 crore under the previous MGNREG Act, he noted.
