Ranchi, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Union Budget has provided a substantial enhancement to the mental healthcare framework in Jharkhand, as the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) in Ranchi is poised to be transformed into a regional apex institution. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly bolster mental health services, research, and training across the eastern region of India.

In her Budget 2026-27 address, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled vital initiatives for the mental health sector, including the elevation of national mental health institutes in Ranchi and Tezpur, Assam to apex institution status.

Moreover, she announced the creation of NIMHANS-2 to meet the long-standing demand for a national mental health facility in northern India.

The Finance Minister highlighted that the lack of a specialized apex mental health institution in the north represented a significant shortfall in the country's healthcare framework, leading the government to make this pivotal decision.

The elevation of Ranchi's CIP is expected to enhance its role on a national scale, paving the way for infrastructure development, advanced research, specialized training initiatives, and the introduction of contemporary treatment options.

This initiative is also likely to foster stronger inter-regional cooperation in the delivery of mental healthcare.

Founded in 1918 during the British era, the Central Institute of Psychiatry stands as one of India’s most esteemed mental health establishments. Initially known as the Ranchi European Lunatic Asylum, the institute has transformed over its 108-year journey into a leading center for holistic mental healthcare, research, and skill enhancement.

Spanning across 211 acres, the CIP is recognized internationally for its open-hospital model, green campus, and patient-focused treatment methodology.

The institute currently serves over 85,000 patients each year, produces more than 130 research papers, and trains numerous mental health professionals annually.

Additionally, the CIP boasts cutting-edge facilities, including a state-of-the-art neuroimaging center, a 3-Tesla fMRI unit, a brain stimulation lab, and a comprehensive medical library.

Its commitment to environmental sustainability, including solar energy utilization and the maintenance of green spaces, has earned it recognition as a ‘green’ institution.

With its designation as a regional apex institution, the CIP is set to reclaim a pivotal role on India’s mental health landscape, heralding a new chapter of advancement and solidifying Ranchi’s status as a center for mental healthcare in the nation.
