At least 89 people were killed and 53 others injured after a fierce thunderstorm, heavy rain, hailstorm, and lightning strikes swept through multiple districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening, 14 May, officials said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognisance of the disaster and directed district authorities to launch relief and rescue operations without delay.

Scale of Destruction

The storm left a trail of damage across the state, uprooting trees, collapsing walls, and damaging homes. According to the Relief Commissioner's Office, the adverse weather also killed 114 livestock and damaged 87 houses across Uttar Pradesh. Multiple lightning strike incidents were reported from different parts of the state.

Prayagraj recorded the highest death toll at 21 fatalities, followed by Sant Ravidas Nagar with 14 deaths and Fatehpur with 11 deaths. Casualties were also confirmed from Barabanki, Bahraich, Kanpur Dehat, Basti, Sambhal, Hardoi, and Unnao.

Ground Reports from Worst-Hit Districts

Additional District Magistrate Vineeta Singh of Prayagraj said severe storm and strong winds struck the district on Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage. 'Till late at night, 17 deaths had been reported in Prayagraj district. Later during the night, the number rose to 21. Lekhpal officials and the district administration reached the affected spots and carried out the necessary formalities. The relief amount provided by the government will be made available promptly once the required documents are received,' she said.

Fatehpur District Magistrate Nidhi Gupta Vats confirmed that the death toll in her district had risen to 11, with 15 people seriously injured, as administration teams conducted relief and rescue operations on the ground.

What the Government Has Ordered

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and directed officials to visit affected areas immediately to provide assistance and compensation. He instructed District Magistrates to conduct ground surveys on priority so that compensation for loss of lives, livestock, and crop damage could be released in coordination with relevant departments.

All districts were directed to submit situation reports every three hours. The Chief Minister also asked authorities to share updates on compensation distribution and relief work via social media platforms. The Relief Commissioner's Office stated it is continuously monitoring the situation through direct communication with district-level officials, and necessary funds are being released to the districts.

Pre-monsoon thunderstorms and lightning strikes are a recurring and deadly feature of Uttar Pradesh's summers, with the state consistently recording among the highest lightning-related fatalities in India. This incident underscores the persistent gap between early warning systems and last-mile communication in rural and semi-urban districts. With the monsoon still weeks away, meteorologists warn that similar storm systems could recur across the Indo-Gangetic Plain through June.
