Dehradun, Jan 19 (NationPress) The Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which was rolled out in Uttarakhand one year ago, has seen remarkable success, particularly in the registration of marriages under this progressive law.
Approximately five lakh marriages have been recorded in the hilly state within a single year, showcasing the successful introduction of the 'one nation, one law' initiative and its acceptance among the populace.
The online registration process has been a significant factor contributing to the astonishing statistics regarding marriage registrations in the state. It has not only streamlined the administrative procedures but also eliminated the need for couples to be physically present at the Sub-Registrar's office for marriage registration.
Uttarakhand became the first state in India to introduce UCC on January 27, 2025, aiming to unify various personal laws governing marriage, succession, divorce, and inheritance.
As the state gears up to celebrate the first anniversary of the UCC's implementation, key achievements have emerged, including women's empowerment, safeguarding children's rights, and ensuring equality in civil rights.
The simplification of administrative processes has yielded positive outcomes across various sectors.
According to government estimates, 4,74,447 marriages have been registered under the UCC, within less than a year of its launch.
Previously, couples needed to appear in person at the Sub-Registrar's office along with two witnesses on a specific date to register their marriages; however, online services have eased these restrictions and enabled quicker registrations.
Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, congratulated the citizens on achieving this milestone and expressed hope that it serves as a model for other states.
"By implementing the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand has paved the way for other states. The transparency and simplicity with which the UCC has been executed over the past year has bolstered public confidence in the entire process," said Chief Minister Dhami.
"This is why a significant number of people are now choosing to register under the UCC. In every aspect, the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code has emerged as a model law," he added.
Today, nearly 100 percent of marriage registrations in the state are conducted online. Couples and witnesses can now apply for registration from any location by uploading necessary documents and providing video statements.
As of January 19, 2026, a total of 4,74,447 marriage registrations have been finalized.
The average daily registrations have surged to nearly 1,400, compared to only about 67 registrations per day under the previous system.
During this period, 316 individuals have also obtained divorce certificates online, while 68 couples registered live-in relationships, and two received certificates for the termination of live-in relationships.
A 15-day time frame has been established for issuing marriage registration certificates post-application submission.
