Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday, 11 June inaugurated a state-of-the-art Makers Lab at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, calling on students to design homegrown chips and drive India's next wave of technological innovation. The event, held at the Vivekananda Lecture Theatre Complex, underscored the Centre's accelerating push into semiconductor education and digital infrastructure.

What the New Lab Offers

The Makers Lab will be equipped with advanced semiconductor infrastructure, including simulation systems for hands-on training in chip design and fabrication. Students and researchers will gain access to industry-grade semiconductor design tools, positioning MNIT Jaipur among institutions receiving world-class training facilities in some of the fastest-growing fields of science and technology.

Vaishnaw also announced plans to establish dedicated laboratories in semiconductor technology, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) at the institute, significantly expanding its research capabilities.

The Semiconductor Push Across India

Addressing students and faculty, the minister highlighted that similar semiconductor education initiatives are being rolled out across 323 colleges nationwide — part of a broader Centre-driven effort to build a domestic talent pipeline for the chip industry. He challenged MNIT students specifically to take their chip designs all the way from concept to the manufacturing stage.

During an interactive quiz session, Vaishnaw pointed to nano-SIM manufacturing in India as a milestone in the country's journey toward technological self-reliance, drawing a direct line between classroom learning and industrial output. He noted that the global semiconductor industry presents 'immense career opportunities' for young Indian engineers.

'India should not only consume technology but also create it. Our students must lead the next generation of innovation,' he said.

Broader Announcements at MNIT

Beyond semiconductors, Vaishnaw outlined plans for an AI data centre at MNIT Jaipur and spoke about the Centre's Digital India initiative as a driver of employment in high-tech sectors. He also announced enhanced rail connectivity for Rajasthan, including daily Darbhanga-Ajmer services expected within two months, and accelerated station redevelopment across the state. Railway funding for border areas has also been significantly increased, he said.

FM Transmitter Inaugurated at Jaisalmer

Earlier in the day, Vaishnaw visited the Akashvani (All India Radio) station in Jaipur and virtually inaugurated a new 20-kW FM transmitter at Ramgarh in Jaisalmer district. The transmitter is expected to improve the reach and quality of radio broadcasting across Rajasthan's border regions.

'From Kashmir to Kutch, efforts are underway to ensure robust FM radio and television broadcasting networks. As part of this initiative, a new 20-kW FM transmitter has been commissioned in Jaisalmer today,' he said. The government is also strengthening Doordarshan infrastructure across India's border areas as part of the same initiative.

With semiconductor labs, AI infrastructure, and upgraded broadcast networks now in motion, the Centre's multi-front push in Rajasthan signals an intent to anchor both digital and connectivity ambitions in the state's institutions.
