New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) Criticizing the ongoing debate surrounding Vande Mataram as a strategy to distract the public, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Wayanad stated on Monday that the national song embodies the essence of the nation and that “there can be no debate on it”.
During a special Lok Sabha discussion regarding the song, Priyanka expressed that this “unnecessary” debate was instigated by the ruling party with the intention of shaping public narrative ahead of the Bengal Assembly elections, while also casting doubt on the contributions of freedom fighters to redirect attention away from pressing issues.
She asserted that the government seeks to avoid discussions on current challenges, such as the plight of the youth suffering from paper leaks and joblessness, the denial of reservations to those in need, injustices faced by women, and pollution, instead opting to resurrect past events to distract the populace.
Priyanka remarked, “Their governance and politics are characterized by arrogance, ostentation, and event management from one election to the next,” and challenged the government to engage in debates on pressing matters that concern the citizens.
She noted that even members of the ruling party are disgruntled with the government due to the excessive centralization of power.
In her speech, Priyanka Gandhi offered rare commendation to PM Modi on two fronts: his rhetorical skills, despite the length of his speeches, and his confidence and policies during his initial years as Prime Minister.
However, her sharp critique highlighted her belief that PM Modi appears less assured now compared to his earlier tenure, with his foreign policy tarnishing India's global reputation.
Addressing PM Modi’s remarks concerning former PM Jawaharlal Nehru regarding Vande Mataram, she claimed that the Prime Minister failed to mention crucial details about the decisions made by national leaders, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Subhas Chandra Bose, presenting a biased narrative.
She also referenced a letter from Nehru that criticized communal sentiments demanding the omission of certain parts of Vande Mataram.
Priyanka asserted that the national song is deeply embedded in the identity of the Congress party, which refuses to engage in futile discussions about historical events.
