Kerala Health Minister Veena George Injured During Protest at Kannur Railway Station
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kannur, Feb 25 (NationPress) Kerala's Health Minister Veena George was injured on Wednesday during a confrontation between protesters and police at the Kannur railway station, which prompted her to abandon her travel plans and seek medical attention.
The Minister had arrived at the railway station to board the Vande Bharat Express after attending official engagements in the area.
As she entered the station, activists from the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student faction of the Congress, alongside members of the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), initiated a protest against her.
Efforts by police to disperse the crowd and create a path for the Minister led to chaos.
During the scuffle, George was caught between the protesters and law enforcement, resulting in injuries to her neck and hand.
Coincidentally, A. N. Shamseer, the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly, had just arrived at the station, with George following soon after.
The situation quickly escalated into a confrontation on the platform.
George was heard on the phone expressing discomfort and pain radiating from the right side of her neck.
Although she initially waited at the station with hopes of continuing her journey, she later admitted that the pain was too severe for travel.
Consequently, her trip was called off, and she was transported on a trolley from the station to a vehicle, which then took her to Kannur District Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Following the incident, local leaders of the CPI(M) began arriving at the hospital, while party supporters gathered outside as medical professionals assessed her injuries.
In response to the incident, Speaker Shamseer remarked that while protests are a democratic right, physically assaulting a Minister is both unacceptable and poses a threat to democratic principles.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the security breach and reevaluate safety measures at the station.
