The Madhya Pradesh Congress veterans' wing on 27 August strongly condemned Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah over his alleged derogatory remarks about Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, demanding his immediate removal from the state cabinet and strict legal action. The condemnation came at a press conference in Bhopal, where retired officers described the controversy as an affront not just to a serving officer but to the honour of the armed forces.

What the Veterans Said

Major General (Retd) Shyam Shrivastava, president of the veterans' wing, said the alleged remarks triggered widespread outrage across the country and drew protests from multiple quarters. 'The Indian Army does not belong to any political party but to the entire nation,' he asserted. He added that derogatory remarks against any Army officer or soldier amount to disrespect towards the sacrifices of millions of citizens and soldiers alike.

The veterans underscored that the controversy erupted at a particularly sensitive moment — when the nation was lauding the Army's role during Operation Sindoor. The timing, they argued, made Shah's alleged comments 'extremely unfortunate and condemnable.'

Court Action and Investigation Concerns

The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and ordered the registration of an FIR against Shah. The Supreme Court subsequently issued directions on investigation and necessary action. However, Major Gen. Shrivastava said the follow-up has been 'unsatisfactory,' disappointing veterans and the wider public.

The controversy deepened after the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet reportedly decided, in a recent meeting, not to grant sanction for Shah's prosecution — a move that also extended political backing to the minister. Veterans expressed strong displeasure over the decision to retain Shah in the cabinet, arguing it sends 'a wrong message on a sensitive issue concerning the armed forces.'

Background: The Mhow Remarks

The controversy stems from remarks Shah is alleged to have made at a public meeting in Mhow, near Indore, on 13 May 2025. The specific content of the remarks has been widely reported as offensive toward Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a serving officer who had come into public prominence during Operation Sindoor. Shah has not been quoted directly in the veterans' statement denying or acknowledging the remarks.

Threat of Street Protests

The veterans' wing warned of launching a 'democratic and peaceful street movement' if timely action is not taken to protect the dignity of the Indian Army and the honour of veterans. Major Gen. Shrivastava made clear that in such an eventuality, the government would be held responsible. The wing has also called on both the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh state government to take firm steps against the minister.

With the Supreme Court's directions still reportedly unimplemented and cabinet-level protection apparently extended to Shah, pressure on the state government is set to intensify in the days ahead.
