Chennai, July 10 (NationPress) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President and actor-turned-politician Vijay raised serious allegations against the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government, claiming that they are denying valuable subsidies to fishermen in Tirunelveli district due to the presence of his party's name on their boats.
In a vehement statement, Vijay stated that fishermen from Kootapuli village, many of whom are supporters of TVK, have emblazoned their boats with the party's name.
He reported that local government officials threatened these fishermen, stating that they would lose their eligibility for state subsidies unless they removed the party's name.
"Who authorized the denial of subsidies to fishermen simply because their boats bear the TVK name?" Vijay questioned.
"Will the same rules be enforced for boats that display the DMK's name or flag?" he added.
Describing this alleged action as 'autocratic', Vijay condemned the state government for treating welfare programs as if they belong to a specific political group.
"Subsidies are not dispensed from the DMK’s personal funds; they come from taxpayers. Every eligible fisherman, regardless of political ties, deserves access to government initiatives," he emphasized.
The TVK leader also criticized both state and Union governments for their ongoing neglect of the fishing community's longstanding issues, particularly the unresolved Katchatheevu dispute.
Vijay highlighted that neither government has taken significant measures to reclaim or lease the strategically important island, which he believes could help alleviate the hardships faced by Indian fishermen who are frequently apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy.
He warned that if the state government persists with what he termed as 'discriminatory practices' against TVK supporters in coastal areas, the party will be forced to initiate a statewide protest.
The state government has yet to provide an official response to these accusations.
However, political analysts interpret this incident as another point of contention in the escalating rivalry between the DMK and Vijay's TVK, which is emerging as a formidable contender in the upcoming Assembly elections.
