Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh), June 21 (NationPress) Amid the ongoing scrutiny surrounding his recent comments about a senior Army officer, Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah aimed to reshape his public perception on International Yoga Day by promoting yoga as a tool for social unity.
During a district-level event in Khandwa, Shah encouraged the city's mayor to organize weekly yoga sessions in each ward, stressing that these gatherings could cultivate social harmony and goodwill in a society that is becoming increasingly divided.
“Yoga transcends caste, religion, and society. It elevates the body, mind, and intellect,” Shah remarked, drawing a symbolic connection between Swami Vivekananda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi — both referred to as “Narendras,” who he claimed have shown the world the way to spiritual and cultural leadership.
These comments arrive as Shah faces both public and legal challenges for his controversial remarks regarding Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, an officer in the Indian Army.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has instructed the police to file an FIR (first information report) against him, while the Supreme Court criticized him for using “unacceptable and insensitive” language.
A special investigation team has since been formed to look into the matter, following directives from the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, on Saturday, Shah adopted a vastly different tone.
In front of more than 600 students from 20 schools at a private institution for the 11th International Yoga Day, he spoke of yoga as a means to reconnect in the digital era.
“We seldom visit each other’s homes anymore. These yoga sessions will provide us with a reason to meet, check on one another, and rebuild community ties,” he expressed.
The event, organized by the district administration, saw participation from public figures, officials, and educators. It resonated with the national theme of “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reinforcing India’s vision of yoga as a bridge between individual wellness and collective awareness.
