Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to formally launch the distribution of new ration cards across the state on 22 June 2025, a date that coincides with his birthday, in what officials describe as a significant expansion of the state's Public Distribution System (PDS). The launch event is expected to be held in Perambur, his Assembly constituency, where the Chief Minister will personally hand over cards to a select group of beneficiaries.

First Phase: 46,000 Cards Ready

The Food and Civil Supplies Department has already printed approximately 46,000 new ration cards, which are ready for distribution in the first phase. These cards will be issued to eligible beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu as part of an ongoing exercise to clear a backlog of pending applications and extend subsidised food grain access to more households.

Since January 2025, the department has received close to 2.25 lakh applications for new ration cards. Officials said scrutiny and verification of applications are currently underway, with eligible applicants being shortlisted for inclusion in successive phases of distribution.

Phased Rollout Across the State

A senior department official indicated that the rollout would proceed in phases, with additional batches of ration cards to be issued in the coming months as verification of the remaining applications is completed. The government expects thousands more households to be brought under the state's welfare network through this process.

Notably, 22 June will mark Vijay's first birthday since assuming office as Chief Minister, lending the occasion added political and symbolic weight. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly preparing a series of welfare programmes and public outreach activities across the state to coincide with the celebrations.

Political Context and Party Activity

Party functionaries in Perambur have reportedly planned welfare initiatives throughout the week leading up to and following 22 June. Similar programmes are expected to be organised by TVK units in districts across Tamil Nadu, reflecting the party's effort to build grassroots outreach around the occasion.

Government officials, however, stressed that the ration card distribution drive is part of a regular administrative exercise and not a one-time political event. The objective, they said, is to ensure eligible families gain access to subsidised food grains and other welfare benefits linked to the PDS — irrespective of the timing of the launch.

What Comes Next

With more than 2 lakh applications still pending verification, the government is expected to continue issuing new ration cards in subsequent phases well beyond June 22. Authorities have not yet specified a timeline for clearing the full backlog, but officials indicated that the pace of verification is accelerating. The scale of pending applications suggests the distribution drive will remain an active administrative priority through the second half of 2025.
