Vijay Declares Independence from NDA: TVK to Contest Tamil Nadu Elections Alone
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 17 (NationPress) The actor-turned-politician Vijay has categorically rejected rumors regarding a potential partnership with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), confirming that his party, the TVK, will independently participate in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
This choice is poised to alter the electoral dynamics, leading to a high-stakes four-way contest in the state.
During a gathering of TVK leaders in Pattinapakkam, Vijay emphasized that the party has not held any discussions regarding alliances with other political groups.
“We are set to contest the elections independently. Mobilize in the constituencies and ramp up fieldwork. The list of candidates will be unveiled shortly. I will also embark on a statewide tour. Victory is certain,” he proclaimed, exuding confidence ahead of the party's inaugural electoral challenge.
Vijay’s declaration arrives amidst recent claims suggesting that negotiations between TVK and the BJP-led NDA were progressing.
Political analysts highlight that attempts were made to transform the contest into a triangular battle by incorporating TVK into the AIADMK-BJP alliance. However, conflicts in ideology and aspirations for leadership seem to have hindered these discussions.
Insiders reveal that the BJP proposed approximately 60 seats for TVK, along with the position of Deputy Chief Minister. In reply, TVK purportedly sought a power-sharing deal whereby Vijay would serve as Chief Minister for the initial half of the term—a proposal that was reportedly dismissed by the AIADMK leadership, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
With TVK choosing to contest independently, the electoral rivalry is now set to involve four significant factions: the DMK-led coalition, the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Vijay’s TVK, and Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which is also running solo.
Meanwhile, TVK is in the process of finalizing its candidates, having reportedly made selections for around 60 constituencies. The party is anticipated to release its comprehensive list and manifesto soon, gearing up for a robust statewide campaign.
Vijay is expected to stand for election from Perambur, while notable leaders such as Aadhav Arjuna (Villivakkam) and Anand (T Nagar) are likely to be nominated. Several other candidates, including Rajmohan Arumugam, Arul Prakasam, and P. Venkataraman, are also under consideration as the party aims to bolster both its organizational and electoral strength.
