Kochi, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Congress' Ernakulam unit President Mohammed Shiyas expressed concerns on Friday, urging the Kerala government to detain actor Vinayakan for treatment, declaring him a "public nuisance".

Shiyas accused Vinayakan of recently posting offensive comments on Facebook about the renowned singer K.J. Yesudas and distinguished filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

This statement was made during a press conference related to a walkathon scheduled for Saturday aimed at combating the narcotics issue.

"He has become a disgrace to the entire artistic community. Behind all this is substance abuse," Shiyas remarked.

These comments arise following several controversial incidents linked to the actor.

Vinayakan had made obscene remarks on Facebook, which he later apologized for on Friday.

Youth Congress leader N.S. Nussur has filed a complaint against Vinayakan with the state police.

Previously, the actor had made a derogatory post during the mourning period of Congress veteran and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Despite calls for legal action at that time, Chandy's son, Chandy Oommen, opposed pursuing a case.

Vinayakan is infamous for making offensive comments and posts about various individuals, as well as for purportedly engaging in improper public conduct, which includes obscene displays from his apartment balcony and verbally assaulting neighbors.

This marks the first time a political figure has officially urged the government to ensure the actor receives treatment.

Vinayakan started his film career in 1995 with the Malayalam movie "Manthrikam" and has also starred in Tamil films.

In 2016, he received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as Ganga in Rajiv Ravi's "Kammatipaadam". His popularity soared further after portraying the antagonist, Varman, in the Tamil action film "Jailer" (2023), featuring Rajinikanth.

Recently, he has faced challenges and has been in the news due to conflicts with neighbors and police.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the delicate balance between mental health and public behavior. While Vinayakan's actions have raised eyebrows, the call for treatment reflects a growing awareness of the need for support rather than punishment. This situation opens a broader dialogue about the responsibilities of public figures and the consequences of their actions.
