Sehore/Bhopal, Nov 27 (NationPress) In response to the violent incidents at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University campus in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district two days earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has mandated a thorough investigation into the occurrences.
CM Yadav has directed Sehore’s in-charge minister, Krishna Gaur, to promptly visit the university campus, engage with students and university management, and implement necessary measures to restore peace and address the complaints.
Additionally, he instructed Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar to organize a high-level review meeting concerning private universities and educational institutions throughout the state, initiating immediate corrective actions as needed.
“With regard to the VIT University incident, in-charge Minister Krishna Gaur has been tasked with visiting the campus, communicating with students and the management, and taking required steps to resolve the issues,” CM Yadav posted on X.
On Tuesday night, over 3,000 students protested vigorously after several classmates reportedly fell ill with jaundice, allegedly due to substandard food and water.
The protest escalated into chaos as students set fire to an ambulance, a bus, and at least three vehicles while vandalizing hostels, the Chancellor’s residence, and other campus facilities.
The unrest was quelled after senior police and district officials arrived and engaged with the protesting students.
Students claimed that the turmoil began when some security personnel allegedly assaulted those who had been voicing concerns for over a month regarding contaminated food and water, but the administration took no action.
Police have filed an FIR against warden Prashant Kumar Pandey and five other staff members under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following a complaint from a student. An investigation is currently underway.
SDM Nitin Kumar Tale, who met with students after the incident, stated that their agitation stemmed mainly from complaints about the poor quality of food and water. He dismissed rumors of a student’s death due to jaundice, clarifying that no such event had transpired.
“We are collecting food and water samples, and all deficiencies will be rectified,” he assured.
In the aftermath of the violence, the university announced a holiday period until December 8, prompting many students to leave the campus in haste.
VIT Bhopal Registrar K.K. Nair emphasized that leaving the campus was not compulsory and that only classes had been suspended. “We have over 12,000 students from across the nation. Those who wish to remain are welcome to do so,” he noted, adding that the situation had normalized.
Nair confirmed that at least 33 students had been diagnosed with jaundice in the past month and had received treatment at Chirayu Medical College and Hospital in Bhopal.
