Visakhapatnam, Feb 26 (NationPress) - The city of Visakhapatnam has achieved a significant milestone by securing a prestigious global accolade, receiving a grant of $1 million as part of the esteemed Bloomberg Philanthropies 2025–2026 Mayors Challenge for its groundbreaking climate resilience program, the Vizag–Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL).
As per a government announcement made on Thursday, the award was revealed on Wednesday.
Among more than 630 cities worldwide that participated, Visakhapatnam distinguished itself as one of the 24 global winners.
This recognition places Visakhapatnam alongside renowned cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Toronto, Cape Town, Budapest, Medellin, and Belfast on the Global Climate Innovation Platform.
The V-PULL initiative, a flagship project of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), has garnered international acknowledgment for its civic engagement framework designed to address the challenges posed by floods, cyclones, and extreme heat through collaborative, citizen-led strategies.
Operating under a citizen-focused, climate-resilient, and hyperlocal governance model, V-PULL is making strides towards effective urban management.
In the competition's initial phase, GVMC was honored to be listed among the top 50 finalists, receiving $50,000 in seed funding along with essential technical support.
According to the statement, this backing enabled the civic body to implement pilot projects locally, conduct structured community meetings at the ward level, test hyperlocal sensing systems, and introduce data-driven decision-making tools.
The participatory strategies for climate resilience and disaster preparedness have established a robust feedback loop between citizens and municipal departments, thereby reinforcing bottom-up governance.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg expressed, "Winning the Bloomberg Philanthropies 2025–2026 Mayors Challenge is a tremendous honor for us. This recognition strengthens our belief in the potential of cities to drive transformative change when innovations are rooted in citizen participation and real-world solutions."
He further stated, "The $1 million grant will be directed towards bolstering our bottom-up governance approach, enhancing disaster readiness, and expanding these initiatives to more wards across the city."
The Mayors Challenge, initiated by Michael R. Bloomberg, former Mayor of New York City, aims to support bold and innovative local governments in tackling pressing urban issues.
This recognition positions Visakhapatnam on a global stage, marking a significant achievement in its pursuit of internationally recognized climate-resilient urban governance.
