Health and Devaswom Minister K. Muralidharan on Friday, 3 July announced a sweeping healthcare package for Wayanad district, covering more than a dozen initiatives ranging from a new super-speciality hospital to upgraded taluk facilities and mobile medical units. The announcement was made at the Wayanad Collectorate during the launch of the district-level Kayakalpam Janasamparkam public outreach programme, aimed at reshaping healthcare delivery based on direct public feedback.

Key Announcements

The centrepiece of the package is the government's decision to establish a super-speciality hospital in Wayanad. In addition, Vythiri Hospital is to be upgraded into a District Model Hospital, with the foundation stone for its Critical Care Unit to be laid shortly. Sulthan Bathery Taluk Hospital will be elevated to the status of a District Hospital, significantly expanding its scope of services.

To address the acute shortage of advanced diagnostics in the public sector, MRI scanning services will be introduced at one of the district's major government hospitals. The Minister also confirmed that adequate staff posts would be created across government hospitals and that pending funds for ongoing healthcare projects would be released promptly.

Medical College Site: A Critical Hurdle

The Minister acknowledged a significant setback regarding the proposed Wayanad Medical College: the land originally identified for the institution has been deemed unsuitable, as it falls under protected forest land. The government is now exploring an alternative site in Mananthavady. Muralidharan cautioned that delays in resolving the land issue could jeopardise the college's regulatory recognition next year. A meeting chaired by the Chief Minister is expected to be convened shortly to reach an early decision.

Infrastructure and Outreach Measures

A dedicated building will be constructed for the District Medical Office (Health), which currently operates without its own premises. Mobile Medical Units will be deployed in areas frequently affected by human-wildlife conflict — a persistent challenge unique to Wayanad's geography. A detailed study into the rising incidence of cancer cases in the district has also been ordered.

Financial assistance under the Arogya Kiranam scheme was announced for a patient from Kambalakkad suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. Water quality surveillance will be intensified to prevent outbreaks of water-borne diseases, including Shigella.

Public Health Context

The Minister highlighted the Health Department's recent record, noting that timely interventions had effectively contained the spread of Nipah and helped keep Shigella infections under control through coordinated action. This comes amid broader concerns about Wayanad's vulnerability to both infectious disease outbreaks and environmental health risks, including the district's elevated cancer incidence — a pattern that health advocates have flagged for several years.

Following the inaugural session, Muralidharan held constituency-wise consultations with elected representatives, officials, and members of the public. The outreach programme, he said, would help shape a long-term roadmap for strengthening healthcare delivery across the district.
