Kolkata, April 7 (NationPress) The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Monday, requesting a revision of its previous ruling that annulled 25,753 job appointments made by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).
The Supreme Court’s Division Bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI), Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice Sanjay Kumar, recently upheld a previous decision from the Calcutta High Court’s Division Bench, which included Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi, that cancelled these appointments.
In its petition, WBBSE argued that until the new recruitment process mandated by the court is finalized, individuals identified as “genuine” should be permitted to continue their duties.
However, there is uncertainty surrounding this request, as the Supreme Court affirmed last week’s ruling by the Calcutta High Court that all 25,753 appointments must be revoked due to the failure of the state government/commission to distinguish between genuine candidates and those who allegedly secured jobs through monetary means.
Even the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, raised questions regarding how the state government identified genuine candidates.
He urged that the state government present to the Supreme Court two lists: one of authentic candidates and another of those implicated, complete with necessary details.
“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee frequently claims to be a lawyer. Therefore, I request her to personally appear in the Supreme Court to submit the lists of ‘genuine’ and ‘tainted’ candidates,” he stated.
Earlier today, while addressing a gathering of job-affected individuals at Netaji Indoor Stadium in central Kolkata, CM Mamata Banerjee mentioned that the state government would seek clarifications from the Supreme Court regarding the classification of genuine versus tainted candidates.
She also indicated that the state government would inquire about the status of current teachers until the new recruitment process is initiated through examinations.
During the meeting, CM Banerjee encouraged those impacted by the Supreme Court ruling to offer voluntary service at their schools during this interim period.
