Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) A resident of the Magrahat region in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, tragically took his own life after discovering his name listed under the "adjudication" category in the final electoral rolls of West Bengal following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, as reported by the police on Wednesday.
The individual has been identified as Rafiq Ali Ghazi, aged 41.
Authorities from the Ushti Police Station found his lifeless body in his home late last night, with a noose around his neck. The remains have been sent for an autopsy at Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital.
According to police sources, Ghazi had been distressed since receiving the SIR notice. After submitting all necessary documentation, he informed his family of the situation. Upon checking the finalized electoral rolls released on February 28, he returned home visibly upset, as his name was categorized under adjudication.
On the night of Dol Yatra, while his family was away, Ghazi was left alone at home. Upon their return, they discovered him hanging from a ceiling fan. The police subsequently arrived to recover the body.
Ghazi's wife expressed her outrage towards the Election Commission regarding her husband's untimely death.
"He had been under immense pressure since the electoral list was published. He feared for his and his family’s future. This is a deeply tragic occurrence. Many in our community share the same predicament. The government must intervene and support the grieving family," a local resident conveyed to reporters.
It was reported that the names of Ghazi and five other family members were also listed in the same adjudication category, along with 111 additional residents from booth number 141 in the area.
