West Midnapore, May 30 (NationPress) Residents of West Bengal’s West Midnapore district are reaping the rewards of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), an important initiative by the Central government designed to ensure that quality medicines are both affordable and accessible to everyone.
The program has led to the establishment of Jan Aushadhi Kendras throughout the district, which provide essential medications at discounts ranging from 50% to 90%. These centers serve as a crucial support system for many, particularly individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The community's response has been overwhelmingly favorable. Residents have noted that the medications available at the Kendras are not only budget-friendly but also effective and trustworthy. Numerous Kendras are currently in operation in West Midnapore, with an increasing demand for additional locations in remote areas.
Santu Ghosh, who manages one of the Kendras, shared his insights with IANS. “I have been operating this shop for a year. Initially, people were skeptical due to their unfamiliarity with generic medicines. However, following promotional efforts, the response has been tremendous. For example, paracetamol is priced at only Rs 15 for a pack of 15 tablets here, which is significantly cheaper than outside. The scheme offers discounts of 50% to 90%. I am grateful to the Prime Minister for this initiative, enabling ordinary citizens to access premium medications at such low prices.”
Harvinder Singh, a loyal customer, remarked: “I have been purchasing my medicines from here for some time now. The quality is outstanding, and it’s saving us a lot of money.”
Initiated in November 2008 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, the PMBJP strives to make quality generic medicines available through Jan Aushadhi Kendras across India. The program has gained impressive traction under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with thousands of centers now operating nationwide.
To encourage the use of generic medicines, March 7 is commemorated annually as 'Jan Aushadhi Diwas.' This year, a week-long campaign from March 1 to March 7 featured various events and awareness initiatives across the country, further motivating citizens to utilize the Kendras.
