Empowering Women in Science: Contributions from Gujarat Biotechnology University
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, March 6 (NationPress) At Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU), female students and faculty are making remarkable strides in scientific research, illustrating the increasing involvement of women in India's science and technology landscape.
The university has fostered a supportive environment for women researchers via its Women Development Cell (WDC), which was launched in 2023. This initiative offers counselling services, an Internal Complaints Committee, and childcare facilities on campus for working mothers.
"When a woman occupies the laboratory, she is molding society's future," university officials remarked.
Women at GBU are actively engaging in research fields such as cardiovascular health, oncology, environmental science, and plant genetics.
A few notable faculty accomplishments include Dr. Surya Ramachandran, who received the Prof. Indira Parikh – 50 Women in Education Leaders Award and the Exemplary Services Award in Cardiovascular Science from IACS India; Dr. Kanti Kiran, who was awarded the Indo-German WISER Grant; Dr. Rohini Nair, who secured over Rs 1 crore from the Gates Foundation for her research on heavy menstrual bleeding; and Dr. Nisha Singh, recognized for her extensive work with over 80 publications and three patents, receiving the SERB Women Excellence Award 2024 and the INSA Medal for Young Scientists.
Student achievements have also been impressive. In the first M.Sc. cohort of 2025, four out of five students in the Biotechnology department earned gold medals.
Additionally, fifty students were awarded Rs 2.5 lakh each under the Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) for their independent research initiatives.
Teams of students led by Kalyani Vikhani and Sanskriti achieved top accolades at the BIOQUEST Hackathon and WAAH Science Laureate Awards for their innovative work on mRNA therapy.
Several students have successfully qualified for DBT-JRF and CSIR-UGC JRF fellowships and have been accepted for advanced research opportunities at the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
On March 9, GBU will honor International Women’s Day with a lecture titled “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” featuring Dr. Deepanwita Chattopadhyay from IKP Knowledge Park, Hyderabad.
Officials emphasized, "Empowering women at GBU transcends equality; it propels the next wave of scientific advancements. Our achievements at prestigious platforms such as NBEC and IIT Bombay’s GENVISION 2025 reflect this commitment."
