Chennai, Sep 20 (NationPress) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday lauded the crucial involvement of women in maintaining and growing Tamil Nadu’s matchbox industry, claiming their input is the very cornerstone of the sector’s triumph.
She spoke at the centenary celebrations of the industry in Kovilpatti, a locality that has become synonymous with matchbox manufacturing in India.
The Finance Minister emphasized that the industry, which started modestly, was significantly shaped and nurtured by women workers whose determination transformed it into a flourishing business.
“In this drought-prone region, where water scarcity remains a pressing issue, women not only protected their families but also carried on this trade with dignity. What began as a small initiative has expanded into such a significant industry through their relentless efforts,” she stated.
Addressing the Centre’s development initiatives, FM Sitharaman highlighted that numerous projects have been introduced in Thoothukudi district and across Tamil Nadu, irrespective of the BJP’s electoral presence. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi regards Tamil Nadu as a vital part of India and is committed to bringing projects here to enhance the state’s development,” she remarked.
She also called on industry stakeholders to devise a detailed plan outlining how the matchbox sector could aid India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. “The Central government is prepared to offer schemes and support to this sector, and I am wholeheartedly dedicated to advancing this,” she assured.
Praising AIADMK MLA Kadambur Raju for his assistance to the local industry, Sitharaman urged citizens to choose leaders in 2026 and 2029 who are “well-versed in regional issues and committed to addressing them.”
During the event, Sitharaman unveiled a commemorative journal celebrating 100 years of the Tamil Nadu matchbox industry, which was accepted by BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran. She also honored women laborers for their invaluable contribution.
BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and M. Paramasivam, president of the National Small Matchbox Manufacturers Association, were among the notable attendees.
The centenary celebrations, with a focus on recognizing women’s labor, provided not only a retrospective look at the industry’s history but also a vision for its role in India’s economic journey toward 2047.
