Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 25 (NationPress) In a remarkable turn of events, two women who connected on Instagram and maintained a friendship for several years, made the courageous decision to escape their abusive husbands and marry each other in Deoria, according to media reports released on Saturday.
The women, Kavita and Gunja, celebrated their union in a modest ceremony that they conducted themselves on Thursday at the Shiva Temple in Deoria.
According to temple priest Uma Shankar Pandey, the couple bought garlands and sindoor (vermillion), carried out the marriage traditions independently, and discreetly departed.
In an interview with reporters, the women expressed their discontent with their alcoholic and abusive husbands, which inspired them to leave their homes and unite in marriage.
Kavita and Gunja revealed to the media that they bonded over their shared experiences of enduring domestic violence from their alcoholic spouses for an extended period.
During the ceremony at the temple, Gunja assumed the role of the groom, applying sindoor on Kavita, exchanging garlands, and completing the seven pheras.
"We faced relentless torment due to our husbands' alcoholism and abuse. This motivated us to seek a life filled with peace and love. We have chosen to reside in Gorakhpur as a couple and aim to support ourselves," Gunja was quoted as saying.
One of the women, a mother of four, recounted her struggles, stating that her alcoholic husband assaulted her daily. After enduring persistent violence despite her pleas, she chose to return to her parents' home.
The other woman shared that her husband also had a drinking problem and falsely accused her of being unfaithful, which ultimately led her to leave him.
Kavita and Gunja are resolute in their commitment to stay together and refuse to allow anyone to come between them. Although they do not currently have a permanent residence, they intend to rent a place to live.
The couple plans to rent a room and embark on their journey as a married couple, even though same-sex marriages remain illegal in the country.
