Yaba Tablets Worth Rs One Crore Seized from Truck in Tripura; Police Investigate Myanmar-Bangladesh Connection

Agartala, Jan 12 (NationPress) In a significant drug operation, Tripura Police confiscated 1.24 lakh methamphetamine tablets (commonly referred to as Yaba tablets) valued at approximately Rs one crore and apprehended two individuals in the capital city on Sunday, officials reported.

The illicit substances were smuggled from Myanmar and were allegedly meant for trafficking to Bangladesh, authorities noted.

A police official stated that the 1.24 lakh methamphetamine tablets were found in a truck loaded with cement.

The police arrested the truck driver, Jamal Hussain (43), and his assistant, Mintu Baman (33). They intercepted the truck, which was traveling from Meghalaya and heading to the bordering town of Sonamura in Sepahijala district.

Officials suspect that the drugs were meant for smuggling into Bangladesh and had originated from Myanmar.

A case has been filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985. Following the detention of the truck driver and his aide, police officials began interrogating them to uncover details about the drug trafficking operation.

The seizure occurred just two days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted coordinated raids across several locations in Tripura on Friday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, targeting inter-state drug cartels involved in the distribution of narcotic substances, including ganja and phensidyl.

A Tripura government representative indicated that during Friday’s raids in three districts of Tripura -- West Tripura, South Tripura, and Sepahijala, the ED officials identified seven individuals, including Dhruba Majumdar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Tripura Police, involved in the drug trafficking network.

Majumdar is currently stationed at the Crime Branch section under the office of the Superintendent of Police in South Tripura district and resides in Baikhora.

Sources revealed that the Tripura Police is considering appropriate legal and administrative measures against Majumdar.

As part of their investigation, the ED also summoned several officials from Tripura Gramin Bank and interrogated them early on Friday.

Although Tripura has emerged as a significant producer of ganja and a transit point for synthetic drugs, including highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, this marks the first instance of such extensive raids conducted by a central agency against prominent drug figures in Tripura.
