Agartala, June 15 (NationPress) - On Sunday, the Tripura Police successfully intercepted a significant drug operation, seizing narcotics valued at Rs 4 crore and apprehending a drug dealer who transported the illegal substances from Mizoram through southern Assam, according to an official report.
A police spokesperson revealed that during routine vehicle inspections at Churaibari, a key inter-state checkpoint in the North Tripura district, officers stopped a vehicle arriving from Assam. Following a comprehensive search, they discovered over 80,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, collectively valued at more than Rs 4 crore. A formal case has been initiated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
The apprehended individual, identified as Sanjay Sahani (24), is currently being interrogated. Authorities suspect that the methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, were illegally imported from Myanmar. These colored pills have gained popularity among youth across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh.
This drug seizure in Tripura occurred just four days after a separate confiscation of marijuana (Ganja) in Agartala. On June 12, officials from the Assam Rifles, collaborating closely with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized around 195 kg of marijuana valued at Rs 30 lakh in the Taranagar area on the outskirts of Agartala.
The Assam Rifles emphasized that this operation is part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border and to safeguard national security. They continue to maintain a high level of vigilance to dismantle smuggling networks operating in the northeastern region.
Numerous drugs, including methamphetamine and heroin, are trafficked from Myanmar and illicitly transported to various regions in India and Bangladesh through northeastern states. Myanmar shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states - Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram - making it a crucial transit point for drugs and other contraband entering India.
