Agartala/Aizawl, March 22 (NationPress) Security forces have apprehended five drug dealers and confiscated narcotics valued at Rs 5.75 crore, according to an official report on Saturday, indicating that the seizures occurred in Tripura and Mizoram.
Authorities in Agartala reported that three individuals involved in drug trafficking were caught in the capital of Tripura late on Friday night, along with a staggering 1.10 lakh methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba tablets or 'crazy drug', with a market value of Rs 5.50 crore.
The narcotics were hidden in a trolley bag carried by the suspects, intended for smuggling into neighboring Bangladesh, as detailed by a police representative.
The arrested peddlers include Sahidul Hussain Talukdar from Silchar in southern Assam, along with two local traffickers, Nayanmani Namasudra from Kachucherra and Biswajit Biswas from Salema in Dhalai district.
A case has been filed against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Officials stated that they would request the court for their remand to investigate the full scope of the drug network and its potential connections across state boundaries.
In Mizoram, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Excise and Narcotics Department officials, detained two drug traffickers and captured 34.94 grams of heroin worth Rs 25 lakh in Lunglei town on Friday night.
The suspects were found transporting the drugs on a Yamaha MT-15 motorcycle, which was also seized.
The confiscated narcotics, along with the individuals, were transferred to the Excise and Narcotics Department for further investigation and legal action.
Additionally, in a coordinated operation, the Assam Rifles and Customs officials seized a shipment of areca nuts, also known as Burmese betel nuts, valued at Rs 1.08 crore in Mizoram.
A defense spokesperson mentioned that based on specific intelligence, a significant quantity of areca nuts, packed in 180 bags, was seized in Zote of Champhai district on Friday.
The areca nuts, worth Rs 1.08 crore, were smuggled into the state from Myanmar and concealed in a forest area.
The contraband has been handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai.
The Champhai district, sharing an unfenced border with Myanmar, is notorious for the smuggling of various drugs, foreign cigarettes, areca nuts, arms, and exotic wildlife.
