Ranchi, Sep 19 (NationPress) General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), emphasized on Friday the necessity of embracing advanced technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), as vital for enhancing India's defence readiness.
The CDS highlighted that future conflicts will not solely rely on traditional weaponry but will also extend into emerging arenas like cyber and space. Therefore, India must be fully equipped to face these evolving challenges.
During his speech at the East Tech Symposium 2025, hosted by the army’s Eastern Command at the Khelgaon complex in Ranchi, General Chauhan remarked: "To fortify our defence manufacturing base, we must consider the swift advancements in technology. AI and other cutting-edge innovations will be pivotal in future confrontations."
He underlined that the choice and deployment of weaponry in modern warfare should be informed by strategic insight and anticipation. To achieve this, research and development (R&D) must align with the shifting geopolitical landscape and technological advancements.
Recognizing that India’s path towards self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing commenced late, General Chauhan affirmed that the nation is now making significant and methodical progress in the right direction.
He noted that the government is diligently working to cultivate domestic capabilities to address emerging threats, particularly in cyber and space warfare.
Linking technological progress to national strategy, the CDS referenced the central government’s Act East Policy, asserting that its goals can only be fulfilled if eastern states like Jharkhand and West Bengal play an active role in establishing a strong defence ecosystem.
Discussing the changing nature of warfare, he stated: "Warfare encompasses both a science and an art. In contemporary settings, a warrior must exhibit creativity and innovation."
He urged defense professionals, technologists, and entrepreneurs attending the symposium to focus on innovation, enabling India to achieve self-reliance in defence and emerge as a global contender.
The three-day East Tech Symposium aims to promote collaboration among the armed forces, defence industry, startups, and academia, and was jointly inaugurated by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Jharkhand, rich in minerals including uranium, could significantly contribute to defence and nuclear development.
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth was present as a special guest at the event.
This marks the fourth edition of the East Tech Symposium, with the inaugural edition held in Kolkata in 2022, followed by Guwahati in 2023 and another in Kolkata in 2024.
