Record Surge: Global AR Smart Glasses Shipments Nearly Double in 2025

Synopsis

In 2025, global shipments of AR smart glasses saw an astonishing increase, nearly doubling compared to the previous year. This article explores the significant trends, technological advancements, and market dynamics fueling this rapid growth.

Key Takeaways

Global AR smart glasses shipments nearly doubled in 2025.
Waveguide-based AR glasses saw a 600% increase YoY.
AI-equipped AR glasses accounted for 70% of waveguide shipments.
China and the US emerged as key markets.
Potential challenges include memory price hikes and geopolitical tensions.

New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) The global market for augmented reality (AR) smart glasses experienced a remarkable surge, with shipments nearly doubling year-on-year (YoY) in 2025, achieving an unprecedented milestone, according to a report published on Monday.

According to an analysis by Counterpoint, the global shipment of AR smart glasses increased by an impressive 98% this year. The second half of the year saw even greater momentum, with shipments soaring by 148% compared to the previous year.

When examining different segments, video-centric AR smart glasses witnessed a growth of over 80% YoY in the latter half of 2025.

In contrast, the waveguide-based AR glasses segment experienced a staggering increase of over 600% YoY, resulting in a more varied competitive landscape.

The share of this segment in total shipments jumped dramatically to 38% in H2 2025, up from just 13% a year prior.

This surge in waveguide-based devices can be attributed to the growing incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities, which offer features like real-time translation, navigation, and image recognition.

Counterpoint reported that AR smart glasses featuring AI capabilities made up around 70% of waveguide-based shipments in H2 2025, a significant rise from negligible figures a year earlier, with China and the US emerging as pivotal markets.

"We anticipate the upward trend in the global AR smart glasses market to persist in the coming years, fueled by the international expansion of leading OEMs, the entry of new players, and improvements in the maturity and production yields of essential display and optical components," stated the research firm.

However, the recent increases in memory prices and geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, along with their repercussions on the global economy, could present challenges, they noted.

A report released earlier in March indicated that the industry experienced a growth rate of 139% YoY in H2 CY25.

In India, shipments skyrocketed by 15 times in H2 CY25, following Meta's official launch in the nation in May 2025, although the country still only represented 2% of global volume, according to the report.

Point of View

I observe that the remarkable growth in AR smart glasses signals a transformative shift in the tech landscape. While the opportunities are vast, the industry must navigate geopolitical and economic challenges to maintain this upward trajectory.
