New Delhi, Nov 17 (NationPress) The Government is committed to ensuring the nation's food security, delivering nutritious food to its citizens, and maintaining profitability in agriculture for farmers, stated Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday.
While inaugurating the Asian Seed Congress 2025, the Union Minister emphasized that the Government aims to enhance productivity per hectare, provide quality seeds to farmers, and lower production costs.
He highlighted the importance of securing fair prices for farmers' produce and compensating them when necessary, along with focusing on diversifying agricultural practices.
Chouhan mentioned that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and various state bodies are actively working to develop bio-fortified crop varieties and those that are resilient to climate change, addressing the critical issue of malnutrition.
The Union Minister stressed that the collaboration of the private sector is essential alongside public institutions for the advancement of high-quality seeds.
He pointed out that seeds from the private sector are often expensive, making them unaffordable for the majority of farmers from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Therefore, Chouhan urged the private sector to reduce seed prices.
He proposed that providing farmers with seeds that do not require annual replacement could alleviate a significant concern within the farming community. Additionally, he instructed companies to tackle the issue of poor-quality seeds with low or no germination capacity and take corrective measures against offenders.
Chouhan further encouraged all agriculture sector stakeholders to register on the SATHI Portal, launched by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, to access the services offered on this platform.
He mentioned the urgent need for developing climate-resilient crop varieties.
"Our nation has 15 agro-climatic zones, necessitating the creation of varieties that can endure drought, heat, and pests," the Union Minister noted.
He also informed that two new rice varieties have been developed using advanced Genome Editing techniques, promising a productivity increase of 19 to 40 percent while using less water and reducing carbon emissions.
Moreover, during his address to seed producers at the event, he underscored the necessity for increased research and development in coarse grains.
The minister invited private companies to voice their concerns before the government.
Chouhan urged companies to find ways to expedite the market introduction of new seeds and committed to working on reducing the testing duration for these seeds.
"The costs associated with testing are high, and the government is willing to collaborate with the private sector to address this issue," he stated.
