India Rises 11 Positions in Network Readiness Index: Now Among the Top 50 Countries

New Delhi, Nov 27 (NationPress) India has surged up 11 positions in the most recent 'Network Readiness Index 2024' (NRI 2024), now securing the 49th position worldwide, as stated by the government on Wednesday.

The nation not only enhanced its ranking but also boosted its score from 49.93 in 2023 to 53.63 in 2024, according to the index published by the Portulans Institute, an independent non-profit research and educational organization based in Washington, DC.

Significantly, India leads in several metrics including AI, FTTH Internet Subscriptions, and Mobile Broadband Internet Traffic, among other indicators, as reported by the Ministry of Communications.

India achieved the top rank in areas such as AI scientific publications, AI talent concentration, and ICT services exports, while securing the second position in FTTH/Building Internet subscriptions, Mobile broadband internet traffic within the country, and International Internet bandwidth. The country also placed third in Domestic market scale and fourth in annual investment in telecommunication services.

The latest report evaluates the network-based readiness framework of 133 economies based on their performances across four essential pillars: technology, people, governance, and impact, analyzing a total of 54 variables.

According to the report, India has exhibited remarkable digital advancement, showcasing substantial strengths in technological innovation and digital transformation.

The performance of India in NRI 2024 is part of a broader trend of progress in the telecommunications sector.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made significant improvements in the country's telecommunication infrastructure.

Over the past decade, tele-density has increased from 75.2 percent to 84.69 percent, with wireless connections reaching 119 crore.

The 'Digital India' initiative has demonstrated success by expanding broadband access to rural regions through collaborations with tech firms, resulting in a dramatic increase in internet subscribers from 25.1 crore to 94.4 crore, alongside a substantial rise in wireless Internet usage.

Additionally, India introduced 5G services in 2022, leading to a rapid enhancement in its global mobile broadband speed ranking from 118 to 15.

The nation now aims to establish itself as a frontrunner in future telecom technologies through the 'Bharat 6G Vision'.
