India’s Electronics Manufacturing Grows Sixfold to Rs 12 Lakh Crore, Says Minister
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, announced on Wednesday that the electronics manufacturing sector in India has experienced remarkable growth over the last decade. Production has increased more than six times, reaching approximately Rs 12 lakh crore in FY25, compared to roughly Rs 1.9 lakh crore in FY15.
In a written statement in the Lok Sabha, the minister noted that electronic goods exports have nearly octupled to around Rs 3.3 lakh crore, while mobile phone manufacturing soared by 28 times to Rs 5.45 lakh crore during the same period.
This impressive growth is attributed to the government's strategic policy initiatives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which aims to create a comprehensive electronics value chain encompassing everything from finished products to components and capital equipment.
Notably, mobile phone exports experienced the most significant increase, skyrocketing 127 times to Rs 2 lakh crore, effectively transforming India from a net importer in 2014 to a net exporter, with over 300 manufacturing units now operational.
Initiated in 2020, the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing has been instrumental in this evolution. Actual investments under the scheme reached Rs 17,519 crore, which is 2.5 times the initial target of Rs 7,000 crore. Production and exports surpassed expectations by 36% and 27%, respectively, totaling Rs 11 lakh crore and Rs 6.2 lakh crore by February.
The PLI scheme has also created around 1.85 lakh direct jobs, achieving approximately 92% of its target of 2 lakh jobs.
Consequently, India has become the world’s second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, with the industry supporting around 12 lakh jobs, both direct and indirect.
By 2025, smartphones have emerged as India's top export item, surpassing traditional exports such as refined petroleum and cut diamonds.
The government is also broadening its focus on IT hardware manufacturing through the PLI 2.0 scheme, with production reaching Rs 18,863 crore and investments totaling Rs 872 crore so far.
Additionally, the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) has garnered investment commitments of Rs 1.15 lakh crore, exceeding its target of Rs 59,350 crore, with an estimated potential for creating 1.4 lakh jobs.
So far, 75 applications have been approved across 12 states under this scheme, according to the minister.
Prasada emphasized that these initiatives are not only enhancing domestic value addition—currently estimated at 18-20%—but are also positioning India as a pivotal global manufacturing hub.
