New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) In a remarkable advancement, organ transplants in India have surged by four times, escalating from under 5,000 in 2013 to almost 20,000 by 2025, as reported by the government.
Currently, approximately 18 percent of these procedures involve organs sourced from deceased donors.
Significantly, more than 4.8 lakh individuals have signed up to donate organs and tissues posthumously through an Aadhaar-based verification system since September 17, 2023, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The nation has reached a pivotal point in its organ donation and transplantation efforts, with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) documenting extraordinary advancements in organ donation, allocation, and transplantation nationwide.
The ministry also revealed that over 1,200 families opted to donate their loved ones' organs after death in 2025, thereby saving thousands of lives and enhancing the quality of life for many.
Each donor is now recognized as a multi-organ donor, significantly transforming the lives of numerous recipients.
India has excelled in conducting complex organ transplants, including heart, lung, and pancreas transplants.
“India is also at the forefront globally in hand transplants, performing more procedures than any other nation. These impressive accomplishments highlight the robust and consistent support from the Government of India, translating policy aspirations into tangible, life-saving results,” stated the Health Ministry.
The nation boasts some of the finest transplant professionals and surgeons globally, who deliver results comparable to the best in the world, and that too at a fraction of the cost.
More families are stepping forward during moments of profound sadness to offer the gift of life, turning loss into hope for countless recipients.
NOTTO advocates for the promotion of a culture of organ and tissue donation within government entities, institutions, and organizations. It endorses multi-organ donations as a fundamental right for every family.
The advancements realized under NOTTO’s leadership also bolster India’s aim for self-reliance in advanced healthcare, minimizing reliance on foreign transplants while ensuring ethical, transparent, and equitable practices throughout the country.
