Regular Eye Exams in Your 40s Crucial for Preventing Glaucoma-Related Vision Loss

New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) Adults in their 40s must have consistent eye examinations to avoid vision impairment caused by glaucoma—a long-lasting eye condition that may lead to blindness, stated an ophthalmologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
In a post on the social media platform X, Dr. Tanuj Dada, who is a Professor of Ophthalmology and the Head of Glaucoma Services at RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, highlighted the importance of early detection of glaucoma, which frequently shows no symptoms. If not identified in time, it can result in vision impairment and blindness.
“Glaucoma is often referred to as the 'silent thief of sight' as it can cause irreversible vision loss if not detected early. Those who are asymptomatic and over 40 years should consider having an eye check-up every two years,” Dada advised.
He further elaborated that glaucoma, known as kala motia, affects the optic nerve and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally.
“This condition is termed the 'silent thief of vision' because it typically does not present with noticeable symptoms,” the expert mentioned.
Individuals at heightened risk for developing glaucoma include those with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of glaucoma.
“Those using steroids, whether in creams, eye drops, tablets, or inhalers, or those who have experienced any eye injury, are also at increased risk for this disease,” the ophthalmologist added.
Research and data from various hospitals indicate that cases of glaucoma-related blindness are on the rise in India, largely due to a lack of awareness and delayed diagnosis.
In many instances, approximately 90 percent of cases in India go undetected.
He emphasized the necessity of regular eye check-ups, timely diagnosis, and effective treatment to protect vision throughout one’s life.
“Individuals with risk factors should schedule annual eye exams to check for glaucoma. For those over 60 years old, an annual examination is essential to prevent blindness from this condition,” Dada concluded.
