New Delhi, Oct 15 (NationPress) Transforming research labs into startup hubs can significantly contribute to enhancing India’s knowledge economy, stated Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, on Wednesday.
During the Grand Finale of the Golden Jubilee Milestone Observation Program at the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) in Thiruvananthapuram, the Minister emphasized the need for an innovation-driven economy with increased involvement from the private sector.
"India is transitioning from being a technology importer to an innovation-driven exporter, and institutions like CSIR-NIIST are pivotal in this shift, merging scientific research with sustainability and entrepreneurship," he remarked.
In celebration of the institute’s 50th anniversary, Singh inaugurated the new Golden Jubilee Building and the CSIR-NIIST Innovation Centre, aimed at transforming research concepts into market-ready products and startups.
“The Innovation Centre will cultivate startups across diverse fields, from agriculture to artificial intelligence, support entrepreneurs, and energize an innovation-led economy," he noted, adding that the first cohort of 10 startups has successfully completed its incubation period.
The Minister also highlighted notable achievements of the institute, which include four innovations of national importance: a biomedical waste conversion rig at AIIMS Delhi that transforms infectious waste into harmless material; a “designer rice” tailored for diabetic and pre-diabetic populations; indigenous Vaccine Vial Monitors (VVMs) to minimize import reliance; and research into sustainable packaging alternatives to plastics.
“These initiatives demonstrate science with social impact,” he stated, noting that these technologies contribute directly to national missions like Swachh Bharat, Ayushman Bharat, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Moreover, Singh, who also acts as Vice President of CSIR, praised NIIST’s accomplishments despite its smaller size. Over the past two years, its budget has surged by 1.5 times to over Rs 120 crore, with half allocated for R&D.
The lab has successfully transferred 28 technologies, signed 65 agreements with industry, and achieved unprecedented levels of external funding and research output, reflecting what the Minister termed as “purposeful excellence.”
“It is crucial to transition from government dependence to self-sustaining ecosystems with a stronger role for the private sector,” Singh remarked.
The Minister also pointed out that CSIR-NIIST has laid the groundwork for two Centres of Excellence—one in Ayurveda Research and another in Performance Chemicals and Sustainable Polymers—echoing Kerala’s heritage in traditional medicine and India’s commitment to green technologies.
“CSIR is at the core of India’s innovation movement, fostering collaborations and providing solutions that have a direct impact on lives,” he concluded.
