Aakash Chopra Predicts MS Dhoni’s Final IPL Season in 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer, has expressed his belief that the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, commencing on March 28, might mark the final season for MS Dhoni, the seasoned player of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as Sanju Samson emerges as his potential successor.
Chopra emphasized that Dhoni should contemplate retirement if he finds himself serving merely as an Impact Player for CSK this season.
“In cricket, unlike football, you can't manage the team from the sidelines. You must be on the field, and MS Dhoni’s exceptional ability to analyze the game sets him apart. That insight and conviction are what define him. I genuinely feel this could be his last season,” Chopra remarked during a conversation with Jio Hotstar.
“He now has an heir apparent. Sanju Samson could take up the wicketkeeping gloves, potentially even this season. However, this is contingent upon MS Dhoni’s fitness and knee condition. If he’s playing solely as an Impact Player, it might be time for him to retire,” he added.
When questioned about Dhoni's status as the unofficial on-field captain for CSK, Chopra responded, “There’s an analogy here. If you want your child to start walking, you need to guide them. But if you want them to run, you must let them go. If you don’t, they’ll never learn. From Dhoni’s perspective, if someone has been chosen as the next Captain, he must take a step back, and I believe he’s already doing that.”
MS Dhoni's contributions will be closely scrutinized as CSK prepares to kick off their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
