'Aakash Chopra: Dhoni Should Retire If Only an Impact Player'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Ex-Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra is of the opinion that the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, set to commence on March 28, might mark the final season for Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) most seasoned player, MS Dhoni, as Sanju Samson is poised to take over his role.
Chopra emphasized that if Dhoni is only contributing as an Impact Player for CSK this season, it may be time for him to consider retirement.
“You can't lead the team from the sidelines; cricket is not football. On the pitch, MS Dhoni's greatest strength lies in his unparalleled game awareness. That insight and determination define his legacy. I genuinely believe this could be his last season,” Chopra remarked during an interview with Jio Hotstar.
“Now, with a potential successor in Sanju Samson, who may even take up the gloves this season, the situation hinges on Dhoni’s fitness and knee condition. However, if he is just an Impact Player, then it's time for him to consider hanging up his boots,” he added.
When asked if MS Dhoni remains the unofficial captain of CSK on the field, Chopra stated, “There's a simple analogy. If you want your child to learn to walk, you must guide them. But to run, you need to let go. Holding on will prevent them from running. From Dhoni's perspective, once someone is named as the next captain, he should step back, which I believe he has already begun to do.”
As CSK gears up to face the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, all eyes will be on MS Dhoni's role.
