Barcelona, April 14 (NationPress) The world’s second-ranked player, Carlos Alcaraz, kicked off his journey at the Barcelona Open with an impressive victory over Finland's Otto Virtanen, winning 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round of this ATP 500 event on Tuesday.

After a solid performance at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he finished as runner-up to Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz displayed poise in his initial match on home turf this season. As the current No. 2, he has a chance to reclaim the top ranking with a title run in Barcelona.

Despite taking a medical timeout due to an arm issue at the end of the first set, Alcaraz showed no signs of struggle afterward, completing the match in 85 minutes. He is now set to face Tomas Machac, who triumphed over Sebastian Baez with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

"It’s wonderful to be back and to secure another win in front of my fans here in Barcelona; it means everything to me. This morning marked my first practice session here to adapt to the conditions. The circumstances are different from Monte-Carlo, but overall, I’m delighted with my performance," Alcaraz stated, as reported by ATP.

At just 22 years old, he has had significant success at this tournament, having won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023. Last year, he was a finalist, finishing as a runner-up to Holger Rune. Alcaraz arrives in Barcelona aiming for his third title this season, having already secured victories at the Australian Open and an ATP 500 event in Doha.

His recent loss to Sinner in Monte-Carlo, which is the third Masters 1000 tournament of this year, has further fueled his motivation to return to winning ways. With the Italian absent from this week’s event, Alcaraz has a clear path to reclaim the No. 1 ranking.

In other matches, second seed Lorenzo Musetti progressed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Spanish wild card Martin Landaluce. After a tightly contested first set, Musetti dominated from the baseline, finishing the match in 88 minutes, setting up a clash with Corentin Moutet.

Third seed Alex de Minaur also moved forward, defeating Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner with a score of 7-6(7), 6-4. De Minaur showcased resilience in the first set, saving a set point during the tie-break, before sealing the match in straight sets. He will next face Hamad Medjedovic in the second round.
