Miami, March 21 (NationPress) Facing a rising star for the first time can often be unpredictable, yet World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz made his debut against teenager Joao Fonseca a smooth affair, securing a straight-sets victory at the Miami Open.

Both players delivered impressive power as they struck the ball, but the atmosphere in the stadium on Friday night was unmatched.

With an enthusiastic crowd cheering him on, Alcaraz maintained his composure and achieved a 6-4, 6-4 win, marking their first ATP confrontation. Despite the heavy Brazilian support rallying behind Fonseca, Alcaraz’s experience proved invaluable as he deftly handled the young player’s spirited challenge.

"I think I was really effective in critical moments. From the start to the finish, I stayed focused. I know how talented Joao is, which is why I was concentrated on every point and every shot," Alcaraz stated during an on-court interview, having saved all three break points he faced, per Infosys ATP Stats.

"I’m pleased with how I managed to stay calm and positive in those tense situations. My serve was a significant advantage for me today," the Spaniard added, according to the ATP’s official website.

Fonseca has now faced defeats against both Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz in consecutive ATP Masters 1000 events, having previously lost to Sinner in two tie-breaks earlier this month at Indian Wells. Despite showcasing his potential in both matches, his raw power and determination fell short of causing an upset.

"For him to compete against us, I believe he and his team will receive valuable insights on what he needs to improve going forward," Alcaraz reflected, recalling his own first match against Rafael Nadal in Madrid in 2021. "He possesses great skills and ample room for growth, but he will certainly achieve it. Competing back-to-back against the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world will be incredibly beneficial for him."

After suffering his first loss of the season to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals, Alcaraz returned to winning form, improving his season record to 17-1 and standing at 73-6 since his surprising first-match defeat to David Goffin in Miami last year. The Spaniard has reached at least the semi-finals in 13 of his last 14 tournaments post that loss. At 22 years old, Alcaraz has also maintained an impressive 13-0 record against younger opponents at the tour level, further proving his discipline on one of the ATP Tour’s grandest stages.

In the vibrant Miami atmosphere, Alcaraz countered Fonseca’s aggressive play by dominating the center of the court and achieving an 80% win rate (35/44) on his first serve. When Fonseca managed to create opportunities, Alcaraz’s speed and defensive skills kept him in control—so much so that Fonseca did not register a single forehand winner during the first set.

Alcaraz pressed the advantage with an immediate break to start the second set, executing a backhand lob winner followed by a down-the-line backhand winner before using a drop shot to break on his third attempt in the game. Fonseca had chances to break in two of his next three return games, but Alcaraz stood firm during those pivotal moments.

Next, Alcaraz is set to face Sebastian Korda in the third round. The 32nd-seeded American defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-0, 6-3 earlier on Friday, kick-starting his campaign in Miami.
