Alzarri Joseph Penalized by ICC for Inappropriate Remarks to Fourth Umpire Ahead of Bangladesh ODI

Basseterre (St Kitts), Dec 10 (NationPress) - West Indies bowler Alzarri Joseph has been fined 25 percent of his match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct due to the use of offensive language during an interaction with a match official, in the first ODI match against Bangladesh, which the home team won by five wickets.

Joseph's actions were found to be in breach of Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to the “use of an audible obscenity.”

Additionally, one demerit point has been added to Joseph’s disciplinary record; this marks his first offence in a 24-month period, as stated by the ICC on Tuesday, just minutes before the second ODI commenced.

The incident took place on Sunday before play began, when Joseph utilized offensive and abusive language in his exchange with the fourth umpire, who had requested that Joseph refrain from stepping onto the pitch while wearing his spikes.

Joseph acknowledged the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The on-field umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and Leslie Reifer, along with third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite, were responsible for levelling the charge.

Level 1 breaches incur a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum fine of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and may result in one or two demerit points.

In the match, Joseph achieved figures of 2-67, and alongside Romario Shepherd, who took 3-51, they assisted West Indies in restricting Bangladesh to 294/6, with skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz scoring 74, Tanzid Hasan making 60, Mahmudullah notching 50, and Jaker Ali contributing 48.

The West Indies successfully chased down the target with an impressive 113 off 80 balls from Sherfane Rutherford and 86 from skipper Shai Hope, finishing at 295/5 with 14 balls to spare.
