Chandigarh, Dec 16 (NationPress) The young golfer from Kolkata, Anshul Mishra, has now etched his name alongside the prestigious winners of the All-India Amateur Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club. The 123rd iteration of this event, revered as one of the oldest globally, witnessed the 16-year-old Mishra triumph over Varun Muthappa by a score of 4 & 3 in a challenging 36-hole final, indicating he was four-up with three holes remaining.

The All-India Amateurs stands as the premier amateur competition within the Indian Golf Union (IGU) framework.

Among the spectators was Shubhankar Sharma, the 2012 All-India amateur champion from Chandigarh, who had previously claimed the title in 2012. Mishra began his golfing journey at the esteemed Royal Calcutta Golf Course under the guidance of Inderjit Bhalotia and is currently training with Jesse Grewal. He has aspirations to compete in college golf in the United States.

Initially, Mishra ranked 15th in the stroke-play segment. He then secured victories against Jaibir Singh in the pre-quarterfinals and Tushar Pannu in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he achieved a notable win over Anant Ahlawat from Haryana.

During the final match against Muthappa, which spanned 36 holes, there was an early advantage for Muthappa. However, Mishra quickly caught up and ended the first 18 holes one-up. He maintained a consistent performance, extending his lead to 5-up after 28 holes.

Muthappa managed to win the 29th and 30th holes, narrowing the gap and had an opportunity to win the 31st with a straightforward birdie. Nevertheless, Mishra halved the hole and ultimately clinched the esteemed championship on the 33rd hole with a score of 4 & 3.
