Anushka Sharma Makes Her Debut as India Faces South Africa in T20I
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Durban, April 19 (NationPress) In the second T20I at Kingsmead, India has introduced Anushka Sharma as a debutant in the batting all-rounder position and included Kranti Gaud in their lineup. Meanwhile, South Africa, unchanged, won the toss and opted to bowl first. They currently lead the five-match series 1-0 after their six-wicket victory over India in the first match at the same venue last Friday.
South Africa's captain, Laura Wolvaardt, mentioned that the pitch is expected to play slower, and having the knowledge of what to chase later could be advantageous. “We still have four more games left in the series, so there will be ample opportunity for us to test our batting by setting a target,” she stated.
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur confirmed that Anushka and Kranti have replaced Renuka Singh Thakur and Kashvee Gautam, who have been rested for this match.
Anushka had an impressive debut season in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) this year, scoring 177 runs in seven matches with an average of 25.28 and a strike rate of 129.19 for the Gujarat Giants. During her participation with India A, she accumulated 116 runs in five innings, averaging 23.2 with a strike rate of 104.50, leading her team to clinch the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars title in Bangkok.
Harmanpreet commented, “We considered bowling first; the surface looks good. Batting first could also be a feasible option. We had meaningful discussions on our shortcomings from the previous game. Our batting was decent, but we failed to execute our bowling plans. Ultimately, it’s about playing good cricket.”
This match also marks a significant milestone for opener Shafali Verma, as she reaches 100 T20I appearances. She holds the record for being the youngest debutant for the Indian women's team in this format and is now the third youngest player globally to achieve 100 T20I caps.
