Durban, April 16 (NationPress) Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her support for emerging seam-bowling all-rounder Kashvee Gautam on Thursday, predicting that she could make a notable contribution in the forthcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa. Harmanpreet labeled Kashvee as a gifted player poised to perform exceptionally well for the team.

With the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup set for June, India has chosen a pace-focused strategy to thrive in South African conditions. Kashvee is likely to make her T20I debut after having participated in ODIs and a Test match in Australia earlier this year, particularly given the absence of fellow seam-bowling all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, who is currently sidelined due to a back injury.

She has been a part of the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), claiming 19 wickets in 18 matches thus far. Additionally, she has also showcased her batting skills, registering 43 runs in an ODI in Brisbane and an unbeaten 34 runs in a one-off Test in Perth.

“Kashvee possesses immense talent. She can make substantial contributions in both batting and bowling, and she is also a fantastic fielder. Having players like her is crucial. Bringing her into T20 cricket is vital, especially with Aman unavailable; she is someone who can excel for the team,” stated Harmanpreet.

“This series is crucial for all the young players who have limited international experience. Providing them with opportunities here will greatly benefit us,” she added during a pre-series press conference while addressing a query from IANS.

Regarding the omission of left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma, Harmanpreet explained that Aman's absence necessitated certain adjustments for the tour commencing in Durban on Friday.

“With Aman’s absence, we had to alter certain combinations for this tour. Vaishnavi's exclusion does not indicate she is out of our future plans; it’s merely a response to our current strategy,” she clarified.

“In South Africa, it’s essential to field at least four medium-pacer options due to the different pitch conditions. In India, we can often opt for an extra spinner instead of one less pacer. Vaishnavi's absence doesn’t imply she is out of our plans; it’s purely about adapting to conditions,” she elaborated.

Harmanpreet expressed her confidence in the existing spin department. “In addition to that, Shreyanka has been performing well. Our spin bowling lineup is already contributing effectively to the team. Deepti has always been a part of the squad.”

“We need to fortify our medium-pace options, which is why we’ve included Kashvee. The decisions made were solely about team dynamics and maximizing our performance in South African conditions,” she stated.

The captain also discussed retaining Uma Chetry as the second wicketkeeper-batter over the younger G Kamalini. “We initially included Kamalini, but she got injured. When Uma joined the team, we decided to maintain consistency with her as the wicketkeeper. Kamalini is fit now and will be playing domestic cricket; we’ll assess the situation moving forward,” she noted.

On the inclusion of right-handed batter Anushka Sharma, who had a successful stint in WPL 2026 and contributed to India A's victory in the Asia Cup Women’s Rising Stars title, Harmanpreet remarked, “She is a remarkable talent who performed exceptionally well in the WPL. Whenever she had the opportunity, particularly in domestic cricket, she impressed.”

“Anushka is an all-rounder who can also contribute with the ball. She is an exciting prospect, and we wanted to include her for experience. Facing a competitive team like South Africa will build confidence, which is vital before the World Cup,” she added.

Riding high on their 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup victory, Harmanpreet believes the squad is in top physical and mental condition to pursue another title at the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup. “Post-ODI World Cup, the team is brimming with confidence. Wherever we go, we carry that confidence, evident in our games against Australia,” she stated.

“The South Africa series is crucial for us before the World Cup; we aim to showcase our best performance. This is a significant chance for us to unite and demonstrate our capabilities,” she emphasized.

Harmanpreet acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Laura Wolvaardt's side, praising the Proteas as a well-rounded team that consistently reaches the latter stages of global competitions. Both India and South Africa will be in the same group for the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup.

“The South African team is quite balanced, featuring talented players and all-rounders who consistently rise to the occasion. In T20 cricket, having quality all-rounders is crucial, and they possess excellent ones. They have been playing remarkably over the past several years,” she mentioned.

“Their consistent performance in finals showcases their competitive spirit. That’s why we wanted to face them before the World Cup; performing well against strong teams enhances our confidence,” she added.

According to Harmanpreet, the main goal for the South Africa series is to prepare the entire squad for battle. “We aim to give opportunities to all players, as this series is critical ahead of the World Cup. It’s essential that every player feels ready as we approach the tournament,” she concluded.

“These five matches hold great importance, and we will strive to provide equal chances for everyone. However, we are here to win, and we intend to give our best,” she stated.
