India Unveils Anushka’s Debut as South Africa Chooses to Bowl First in 2nd WT20I
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Durban, April 19 (NationPress) In a notable move, India has introduced batting all-rounder Anushka Sharma for her debut, while Kranti Gaud has also been included in the playing eleven. This comes as an unchanged South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first during the second T20I at Kingsmead on Sunday.
The series stands with South Africa leading 1-0 after their six-wicket victory over India in the first match at the same ground on Friday. South Africa's captain, Laura Wolvaardt, expressed, “The wicket should be a little slower overall. Nice to know what to chase later on. There are still four games in the series, so we have ample opportunities to test the batters by batting first.”
India's captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, confirmed that Anushka and Kranti replaced Renuka Singh Thakur and Kashvee Gautam, who have been rested for this match.
Anushka has shown great promise during her initial stint in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), scoring 177 runs in seven matches at an average of 25.28 and a strike rate of 129.19 for the Gujarat Giants. She also scored 116 runs in five innings at an average of 23.2 and a strike rate of 104.50 while representing India A in winning the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars title in Bangkok.
“We were considering bowling first. It's a good surface, and batting first is also a viable option. We had constructive discussions regarding our mistakes in the first game. While our batting was decent, our bowling plans needed better execution. It’s all about playing quality cricket,” she added.
Additionally, Sunday’s match marks the 100th T20I appearance for opener Shafali Verma, who holds the record as the youngest debutant for the India women’s team in this format. She is now the third youngest player, across men’s and women’s cricket, to achieve this milestone.
