Northamptonshire, May 13 (NationPress) - The Northamptonshire cricket team will be without Ashton Agar for the upcoming Vitality Blast as the Australian spinner has been sidelined due to a calf injury.
Having enjoyed a successful season last year, Agar was eager to return to Wantage Road with the ambition of advancing beyond the quarter-finals, a feat the Steelbacks achieved previously. However, this injury has thwarted his plans for a comeback.
“I’m incredibly disappointed to miss this year’s Vitality Blast with Northamptonshire,” Agar expressed.
“My time there last season was truly enjoyable; it’s a remarkable club filled with wonderful individuals, and I will be cheering for the boys from Perth,” he added.
Northamptonshire has indicated that they will announce an overseas replacement for the 2025 Vitality Blast soon.
“We’re all very saddened for Ashton, but we wish him a swift recovery,” remarked head coach Darren Lehmann.
During his previous engagement, Agar notably excelled with the bat, boasting a strike rate exceeding 190 across six innings.
His contributions were vital in the intense final matches, including a remarkable 31 runs off 14 balls in a rain-affected clash against Durham and hitting the winning runs in the Steelbacks’ historic victory against Lancashire Lightning at Old Trafford.
Agar’s seasoned presence was invaluable for the team, as the Steelbacks clinched victory in four of the last five group matches he participated in.
There is also some uncertainty regarding Matthew Breetzke, the South African batter, and his availability for the start of the Blast due to the disruptions caused by the IPL 2025. Although Breetzke hasn't played this season, he is under contract with the Lucknow Super Giants and is expected to return to India for the rescheduled conclusion of the tournament.
