Pune, March 1 (NationPress) A total of 16 teams from across the state will compete for the prestigious title in the first-ever Asmita Hockey State League, scheduled to take place at the Maj Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium, Nehrunagar-Pimpri starting this Saturday.

The tournament will feature two categories: sub-juniors and juniors, commencing on March 7 and concluding on March 14.

Under the supervision of Hockey India, Sports Authority of India, and Hockey Maharashtra, the junior girls' division will have teams from eight districts, with a similar number in the sub-junior girls' category.

Each category will start with a round-robin league format, and the top two teams from each will advance to the knockout semifinals, ultimately leading to the final.

Both champions in the sub-junior and junior categories will receive cash prizes for their outstanding performances.

According to Abhinav Sharma, Deputy Director at the Sports Authority of India (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, MYAS, Government of India), “The Asmita Women’s League is part of the Khelo India initiative aimed at promoting women's sports in India. Collaborating with SAI and Hockey India, the league seeks to enhance female participation in sports by organizing various leagues to discover new talents, assess existing Khelo India athletes, and provide competitive exposure to female athletes across different age groups nationwide.”

The Asmita Hockey State League will kick off with an exhibition match featuring former Olympians and international players from the state competing against schoolgirls, followed by the official launch of the Asmita Trophies on Saturday.
