Raipur, March 28 (NationPress) In a remarkable journey, Babulal Hembrom, a weightlifting prodigy from Keribanda village in Ramgarh District, Jharkhand, took the advice of former Army coach Gurvinder Singh to heart. He shifted his focus exclusively to weightlifting, despite facing the daunting challenge of financial constraints that hindered his pursuit of the sport.

Refusing to relent, Babulal resorted to training with bamboo sticks and iron rods at construction sites until he was able to join the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society coaching center, which required a daily commute of 60 km under Gurvinder's guidance.

“Starting in 2018 was incredibly challenging. We couldn't afford proper equipment, so I had to make do with what I had. However, with the coaching support from JSPS and my coach, I've achieved so much,” stated Babulal, who recently clinched the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026.

At just 19 and the youngest of five siblings, Babulal shared, “My mother works as a cook in a local school, while my father takes up odd jobs. Financial struggles have always been part of our lives, but I believe that my achievements in Khelo India will pave the way for further success.”

Babulal Hembrom has made a name for himself on both national and international platforms in the age-group circuit. In 2024, he won a gold medal in the 49kg category at the Khelo India Youth Games in Chennai, followed by medals at prestigious events like the IWF World Youth Weightlifting Championships and the Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships.

Now transitioning to the senior circuit, Babulal aspires to join the Indian team for major international competitions and is actively participating in national camps in Patiala.

“This silver medal from the Khelo India Tribal Games has bolstered my confidence that I am on the right track. Once I return to the national camp, I plan to discuss my future goals with my coaches. My ultimate ambition is to represent India in significant international events, including the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and world championships,” Babulal concluded.
