Why Did BCB Postpone Tuesday's BPL Matches Following Khaleda Zia's Passing?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to delay both matches of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) that were set for Tuesday, due to the unfortunate demise of Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who passed away earlier that morning.
This decision came swiftly after the announcement of her death, just a few hours before the scheduled toss for the first game of the day, featuring Sylhet Titans against Chattogram Royals at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
In an official post on X, the BCB expressed, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.”
“We remember her with gratitude for her unwavering support and good wishes for the advancement of cricket in our nation. Her tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant backing for cricket development, leading to substantial enhancements in cricket infrastructure and the growth of the sport across Bangladesh. Her visionary approach and encouragement were crucial for the progress we see in cricket today.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board extends its heartfelt condolences and joins the nation in mourning this immense loss. We pray for the eternal peace of her soul,” the statement continued.
In a follow-up post, the board announced, “In light of the national mourning and to honor the legacy of Begum Khaleda Zia, we regret to inform that the BPL matches scheduled for today, including Sylhet Titans vs. Chattogram Royals and Dhaka Capitals vs. Rangpur Riders, have been cancelled and will be rescheduled.”
The current season of the BPL, which began on December 26, had already completed three matchdays. The second match on Tuesday was supposed to feature Dhaka Capitals against Rangpur Riders.
Fortunately, the postponement is not expected to significantly impact the overall schedule due to the multiple breaks between matchdays.
