New Delhi, Oct 21 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent an email to Mohsin Naqvi, the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), requesting the return of the Asia Cup trophy to India, the recent champions in Dubai.
Following their victory over Pakistan by five wickets in the final match, the Indian team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi during the post-match ceremony. The reason for their refusal was that Naqvi also holds the position of chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
According to media reports, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia mentioned that they are waiting for a response from Naqvi. If they do not hear back, they plan to escalate the situation to the ICC with an official communication, stating that the board is "progressing step by step and will continue to pursue this matter".
After the final match, the Indian team management sought information on who would present the trophy and expressed a preference to receive it from Khalid Al Zarooni, vice-chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board. However, Naqvi reportedly dismissed this suggestion.
During the presentation ceremony, Indian players Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma accepted their individual accolades from other dignitaries on stage. When Naqvi arrived at the ceremony, the Indian team made it clear they would not accept the trophy from him. Shortly thereafter, the trophy was quietly taken away, leaving the champions without their award.
In a previous ACC meeting on September 30, BCCI had formally voiced their objections regarding the decision not to present the winner's trophy to the Indian team and the controversial actions of the ACC chairman during the post-match event.
BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla, who represented the board at that meeting, confronted Naqvi with critical inquiries, questioning, "Why was the trophy not given to the winning team? The ACC trophy is not the personal property of any individual," he reportedly stated during the discussions.
