Is the 'No WAGs' Policy Still Enforced for Indian Players in the T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) The BCCI has maintained its stance regarding the exclusion of players' families from accompanying them throughout the T20 World Cup journey, as reported.
Per the BCCI’s regulations, for series or tournaments exceeding 45 days in duration, family members are permitted to join players for a maximum of 14 days, while on shorter tours, this duration is limited to just seven days.
According to a report by the Indian Express, the Indian team management requested clarification on the possibility of allowing cricketers’ families to be present. However, the board firmly stated that “families won’t be staying with the players.”
“The board has made it clear that families won’t be staying with the players. They can make separate arrangements, though, if they wish to,” the report cited a source as saying.
India is set to play three league phase matches at home and one game in Colombo (against Pakistan) during the T20 World Cup.
The directive to prevent players' wives and families from joining them on tours, which was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, was reinstated last January following India's disappointing performances in Test cricket, including a 0-3 loss at home to New Zealand in 2024 and a 1-3 defeat in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, to address these concerns.
Officials believe that having families present, especially during overseas tours, can be distracting for players and can adversely affect their performance. Additionally, the BCCI has implemented a policy requiring all players to travel together with the team at all times.
India kicked off its T20 World Cup campaign with a victory over the USA and will face Namibia on Thursday at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, followed by a match against archrivals Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.
