BGT: Gavaskar draws parallels between Ashwin's mid-series retirement and Dhoni's 2014-15 decision

Brisbane, Dec 18 (NationPress) Former Indian captain and iconic opener Sunil Gavaskar expressed his thoughts on Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement and its impact on the team dynamics, stating that the allrounder's decision mirrored MS Dhoni's mid-series retirement during the 2014-15 series in Australia.
Ashwin declared his retirement from international cricket right after the drawn Gabba Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar compared this move to MS Dhoni's mid-series retirement from the 2014-15 Test series, emphasizing how such choices can disrupt the team's strategy.
"He could have opted to say, 'Listen, at the end of the series, I won't be available for selection for India.' Such an announcement, akin to MS Dhoni's retirement after the third Test in 2014-15, leaves the team one player short," Gavaskar stated during a broadcast.
"The selection committee has chosen numerous players for a tour with specific intentions. In case of injuries, they can turn to reserve players. Sydney typically offers substantial support for spinners, allowing India to potentially field two spinners. Who knows? He might have been a part of the squad. The pitch condition in Melbourne is uncertain. Generally, one tends to consider the end of the series, not in the middle of it," he added.
When queried if Washington Sundar was being prepared to take Ashwin's place, Gavaskar acknowledged that this appeared probable. “Perhaps Washington Sundar is in the lead. Rohit indicated that Sundar is departing tomorrow. Thus, this signifies the conclusion of Ashwin's international career. He has been an extraordinary player,” Gavaskar remarked.
Meanwhile, Sundar shared an emotional message for fellow state-mate Ashwin on Instagram after the allrounder's retirement. "More than just a teammate - Ash anna, you have been an inspiration, a mentor, and a true champion of the game. It has been a privilege to share the field and the dressing room with you."
"Being from the same state of TN, I have grown up watching you closely from Chepauk to competing against you and playing alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The lessons, both on and off the field, are things I will cherish forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever lies ahead," the post expressed.
Ashwin’s retirement occurs at a pivotal moment in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the series delicately balanced at 1-1 following the drawn Gabba Test. His absence creates a significant void in India’s bowling lineup, particularly as they gear up for the forthcoming Test in Melbourne and Sydney, venues known for favoring spinners.
