Melbourne, Aug 13 (NationPress) Veteran seamer Scott Boland has expressed confidence that Australia can excel against England in this year's Ashes, provided the pitches remain consistent and conducive to bowling, which would help counter the visitors' aggressive “Bazball” strategy.
The five-match Ashes series is set to commence in Perth on November 21. "They’re going to play aggressively. If the wickets maintain their character as they have in recent years, I believe we’ll be competitive throughout the series," he stated.
"There were moments during the previous England tour where the ball moved well and favored bowlers, but generally, the pitches over there have been more placid. Conversely, in Australia, especially over the last three to four years, the conditions have favored bowlers," Boland remarked, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, on the occasion of 100 days to go until the Ashes in Melbourne.
Boland took 18 wickets at an average of 9.55 during his debut Ashes series against a pre-Bazball England team in 2021/22, but he could only manage two wickets at an average of 115.50 in last year’s Ashes in England. With Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood ahead of him in the selection race, Boland stated he is ready to give his all if the opportunity arises.
"I’ve certainly reflected on my performance since 2023. I still believe there were instances in England where I bowled well but failed to take wickets. I’m a better bowler now than I was then, and I’ll be in familiar conditions. I’m eager to deliver strong performances," he added.
He also suggested that Australia may not deploy a four-man fast-bowling attack during the Ashes, highlighting Nathan Lyon’s effectiveness at home and the anticipated return of all-rounder Cameron Green as a seam bowling option.
"I hope so, but probably not in Australia. Nathan is among the best spin bowlers globally, so he can perform in any conditions. He’s been a pivotal component of our bowling lineup over the past few years," he explained.
"I also expect Greeny (Cameron Green) to return and bowl significantly, but since he hasn’t bowled in 12 months, that may impact the likelihood of fielding four fast bowlers," he concluded.
